Chapter 9: Seeking A Childhood

Other orders of beings also share this halt at the bridge of life and death….

—Major General Joshua Chamberlain

Just prior to the great battle fought in Gettysburg, the 1860 census showed a population of approximately 2,400 in the town. Research has shown that there were about 400 structures in and around the small crossroads town.

Enter two armies—nearly 175,000 men—jamming the streets and roads and fields surrounding Gettysburg, attempting to tear each other to bits, and in so doing, leaving anywhere from 44,000 to 51,000 casualties behind, to be cared for immediately after the battle by a handful of doctors, orderlies and the good citizens of Gettysburg who returned to find their town metamorphosed in just three days into one vast charnel-house.

To say the least, the tidy homes, barns, farmhouses, and yards were overflowing with men who were seriously hurt and badly needed shelter from the elements. Driving through Gettysburg today, you can see many of the original Civil War structures still standing. With a little imagination, you can reflect upon the horrors each and every one held for a few weeks in American history.

Being a college town, Gettysburg’s many small houses are today rented as residences to some of the students. The fact that many of the structures date back to before the Civil War, and were used as temporary field hospitals or shelters usually has had little effect on the students who rent them and are intent upon studying hard or partying hard, depending on their current work load.

A former student at Gettysburg College, who has gone on to a distinguished career in law as assistant state’s attorney in Baltimore, related the story of how, as a student, she was at a party at the residence of a friend. The house was half Civil War era and had been added to sometime after the war. It still stands on Baltimore Street in Gettysburg.

It was getting late. The beer had been flowing, the music playing, the kids dancing. The party was in full swing.

Looking through a couple of doorways and back into the Civil War section of the house, the future barrister noticed a fresh-countenanced young man standing and watching the goings-on with a peculiar look on his face. The more she watched him, the more she saw it was a look of wanting to join in. Catching his eye, she motioned for the young man to come join the party, have a beer, and stop being a wall-flower. He just stood and stared, the expression on his face becoming even more pained.

“Who’s that in the kitchen?” she asked the host as he stumbled by. Recalling how youthful the face was, she asked, “Is that somebody’s younger brother visiting campus?”

The host simply smiled. “Oh,” he said. “You saw him too.”

“What do you mean?”

“Our ghost. Somebody always sees him when we have a party. He’s a young guy, and he always seems to want to join in. But he never does. It’s almost as if he’s stuck back there in the old part of the house and can’t pass through into this part.
